Panic Attacks

It HAD been years or at least a year since I have had a full-blown panic attack.  I used to have such severe panic attacks that I ended up in the ER.  Prozac has really worked well for me over the past few years.....until today.  I had a panic attack.  No idea why.  No reasoning.  But it was manageable.  Not my favorite way to spend a Sunday afternoon but I made it through.  Lorazepam to the rescue!

Years ago, I was ashamed to mention my panic attacks.  My ex-husband thought I made them up.  I thought I was losing my mind (the jury is still out on that).  NOW it seems that many of my friends have anxiety or panic attack issues.  It's more the norm these days, I think.  Or maybe people aren't afraid to talk about them?

I still remember the feeling of finally giving in and going on Prozac.  What a negative stigma Prozac had, at least back in 2008 when I went on it.  I had tried Imipramine, Trazadone, Zoloft, Paxil....nothing worked.  A few weeks after starting on Prozac, I knew I had found the right medicine.  My father-in-law said to me "please don't ever go off of your Prozac".  Apparently it has made me a more tolerable human being.  And I'm okay with that!

  1. Hello there! This article couldn't be written any better! Reading through this article reminds me of my previous roommate! He always kept preaching about this. I most certainly will send this post to him. Fairly certain he will have a very good read. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I think getting help is something to be proud of and something people should be happy that it is working for you! Way to go on taking charge of your life! :)

  4. I have had panic attacks since I was about 15 years old. My Dad would never take me to the Dr b/c he too said I was just making it up so I had to wait until I was old enough to go on my own. I have tried the anti depressants but none really worked for me. I now take a low dose of Valium for the past 15 years 3 times a day and have had only a few since then! It's a very scary feeling, and even worse when those around you just don't "get it". I'm glad the Prozac is working for you!

  5. I'm really sorry you experienced this. There's a huge difference between anxiety attacks and panic attacks. I used to have panic attacks growing up, and it can get so back it is physically painful, right? Now I only get them maybe 2 times a year, but anxiety attacks can be more frequent. I've found cognitive-behavior therapy to be much more helpful for anxiety than medication, though a good balance is admittedly the best. I hope you don't get another one for a long time!

  6. I also take Prozac...Luckily, I haven't had a Panic Attack in a very long time. I think keeping my stress level down helps out a lot. :)

  7. My mess also make me a more tolerable human being - to the point that my husband will pointedly remind me to go take them when I get too intolerable. (Oddly enough, that never seems to make the situation better ;) )
